Things to Do in Newport Where You Can Say Hello to Animals
Newport is home to everything from migratory birds to gray whales to sea lions and so much more. Some activities in Newport are more conducive to wildlife viewing than others. Here are some of our favorites.
Whale Watching
One of the most popular things to do in Newport is whale watching. There are two peak seasons: one from mid-December through mid-January and the other from late February through May or June. The best way to try to spot gray whales on their migration journey is with a guided tour like the ones from Marine Discovery Tour or Newport Tradewinds. You can also head to Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area to see if you can see them from dry land.
Bird Watching
An easy way to search for wildlife is by birdwatching. This is an activity you can enjoy while out hiking. Wander the Yaquina Bay Estuary Trail and keep your eyes open for Bald Eagles, white-tailed kites, and Peregrine falcons. Other great spots are the observation deck at Yaquina Bay State Recreation Site and the aviary at the Oregon Coast Aquarium.
Other Animal Encounters
The list of animals you can see in Newport doesn’t stop with birds and whales. Head to Port Dock One to watch sea lions lounge around the floating docks. Wait for low tide to explore the tide pools at spots like Devil’s Punchbowl or Quarry Cove for smaller aquatic creatures like sea stars and anemones. We also recommend visiting the Newport Discovery Museum, which rescues exotic animals.
