7 Things to Do in Oregon in Winter

  1. Head to Devil’s Punchbowl State Natural Area to watch winter storms roll in. Be sure to remain a safe distance away as you watch the storm push ocean water through the hollow formation.
  2. If you’re staying with us early in the season, head to Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area to watch gray whales migrate south to the warm waters of Mexico. The winter migration usually takes place from mid-December through mid-January.
  3. For adventures away from the sea, go for a winter hike along popular area trails. The Yaquina Head Lighthouse and Cobble Beach Loop is a short path with incredible lighthouse views. For a longer route, try the 2-mile Forest Park Trail.
  4. Head indoors and explore the unusual artifacts found at Ripley’s Believe It or Not! This nearby attraction is home to all kinds of oddities like pop-culture memorabilia and a shrunken head.
  5. Another popular indoor option is the Oregon Coast Aquarium. This Newport spot is an excellent place to learn about aquatic life, like sharks, otters, octopi, and sea lions. Be sure to check the animal feed time schedule for even more fun.
  6. Winter is prime Dungeness crab season. Try your hand at crabbing with one of our marina’s crab boat rentals, which comes with three baited rings and a crab gauge. You can also go out with a local charter like Newport Tradewinds or Yaquina Bay Charters.
  7. See what you can find wandering the bayfront. This area is home to incredible art galleries like the Roger Yost Gallery and popular shops, including 101 Local.
