One of the best things to do on any summer vacation is to spend a day at the beach. Whether you’re someone who loves to relax with a good book or test your surfing skills, the beaches near The Embarcadero Resort & Marina are perfect for all sorts of activities. A fun and popular pastime that anyone can enjoy on an Oregon coast vacation is agate hunting. Keep reading to learn more about tips and tricks to make your beachcombing adventure successful.
What to Look For
When walking along the shoreline, it can sometimes be difficult to immediately tell if something is an agate or a different kind of beach rock. The best way to tell if something is an agate is to hold it up to a light, like the sun, to see if it glows. These rocks come in a variety of colors and often have a banded structure.
Where to Search for Agates
Several spots near our Newport resort are known for being prime agate hunting locations. Two popular locations are Beverly Beach State Park and South Beach State Park. However, one of the best and most well-known spots is the Agate Beach State Recreation Site. No matter which beach you visit, look in gravel beds along the shoreline.
When to Go Beach Combing
When you go searching for agates is just as important as where you look. The best time to go “hunting” is at low tide. The receding water can help expose fresh areas of shoreline that have not been picked over. Check a tide table to plan the perfect time to head to the beach.
Other Things to Keep in Mind
You don’t need much equipment to enjoy agate hunting. All you really need is something like a bucket or bag to hold your treasures. We also recommend wearing well-draining hiking boots or shoes. There is a limit on how many agates you can collect. You can gather up to a gallon bucket worth a day and no more than three gallons per calendar year.
